DIY Lip Balm
If you’re like me, you’re never without a lip balm, especially in the dry winter months. Making your own natural lip balm is easy and fun! You can customize the balms to have different flavors, herbal properties, and even add a little shimmer with natural mica powders. Using ingredients like shea butter and coconut oil nourish the lips without harmful additives and unnecessary ingredients. So let’s make some!
You will need:
Double boiler (you can make a double boiler with a regular kitchen pot and a glass jar or measuring cup)
lip balm tubes or tins
2 Tbsp shea butter or cocoa butter
1 Tbsp coconut oil
1 Tbsp herb infused oil (or plain carrier oil of choice)
2 Tbsp beeswax
1/2 tsp vitamin E
Optional Ingredients:
mica powder
flavoring
To make the balm:
Heat about two inches of water in your double boiler or pot.
Place the butter, coconut oil, herbal oil, and wax in the top of the double boiler. If using the home made double boiler method, place the ingredients in a glass jar or measuring cup and place it in the water bath.
Heat the ingredients until melted and combined.
Remove from heat and add in the vitamin E and any extras such as mica powders or flavoring.
Stir to combine.
Pour into tubes or tins and let cool to harden.
And there you have it! This recipe is fun to customize with different herb infused oils. Use a lemon balm infusion for cold sores, or a nourishing calendula infusion. Another alternative to mica powder for color is an alkanet root infused oil. Have fun experimenting!
